iRobot describes Error 1008 as a stalled mop-pad actuator that prevents the robot from moving. Its support page names Roomba Combo j7+, Combo j9+, and Combo 10 Max. It does not establish that the same code or recovery applies to every Roomba Combo model.

The source says an object on top of the stowed pad or a tight space without room for the pad to move can contribute to the alert. If the robot can move elsewhere and retry, let it do so. If it pauses for help, use the documented first check below.

Reboot when the pad will not deploy

If the robot is not mopping or deploying its pad, iRobot says a reboot may resolve the issue even when no Error 1008 is displayed. Hold the robot button for about 20 seconds. iRobot says this clears the error from the robot’s memory.

Clear the area and resume

  1. Move the robot to a clear location where the pad has room to move.
  2. Make sure nothing is resting on top of the robot or its stowed mop pad.
  3. Press the robot button to resume.

If the pad arm remains stuck, iRobot gives different next steps for its named model groups:

  • Combo j7+ and Combo j9+: Place the robot on its dock and allow a few minutes for the pad arm to reposition. If it remains stuck, contact iRobot support.
  • Combo 10 Max: iRobot provides a separate manual arm-positioning step with linked visual guidance. Follow the current visual instructions on iRobot’s page; do not force or reposition the arm from a text-only guess. If the visual guidance is unavailable or the alert persists, contact iRobot support.

Keep the model boundary

Confirm the full model name in the app or on the product label before choosing a recovery branch. The code alone does not show that an actuator has failed or establish a replacement part. This guide does not cover internal repair or arm disassembly. For another alert or uncertain model, start with the alert identification workflow.
