iRobot defines Error 36 for i Series, j Series, and Combo 10 Max as a condition where the robot’s sensors did not clear after debris was evacuated into the dock. A clogged dock can also leave the bin full and lead to the alert. The same source does not establish applicability to every Roomba or dock.
Try the external checks first
Use the current support instructions for the exact robot and dock:
- Remove the bin, open its door, and remove the filter.
- Rinse the bin and bin door, then let them air dry. Keep the filter out of the rinse step.
- Wipe the robot’s bin-full sensors with a clean, dry microfiber or soft cotton cloth.
- Remove the brushes only as the model instructions allow and check that the vacuum path is clear.
- Retry the robot. If it still cannot evacuate debris, check the dock for an accessible clog using the dock’s own instructions.
If the alert remains, the iRobot article describes dock maintenance and a robot reboot for its named models. Follow its exact contact-cleaning and reboot instructions; the sensor cloth and charging-contact cleaning steps use different materials.
Avoid model-sensitive disassembly
The support page also describes removing the bottom cover and bumper to clean internal infrared sensors, but robot construction varies and some named newer models are non-modular. It also presents a factory reset as a final step that deletes saved data. Do not remove a cover or reset the robot from a generic Error 36 instruction; confirm the exact construction, warranty, and current manufacturer guidance first.
Error 36 is different from iRobot Error 360. If the supported external checks do not clear the alert, contact iRobot Customer Care rather than assuming a sensor, dock, or bin needs replacement.
